Rhylie Anderson wins Dr. Charles B. Florio Award

Submitted by Dr. Andrew Yox, Honors Director

A sophomore Winnsboro Presidential Scholar and President of Alpha Mu Chi became the first winner of the Dr. Charles B. Florio Award for Leadership.  Rhylie Anderson will receive $200, given by an anonymous donor, in memory, of ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s longest-term President.

Anderson is the leader of both the Phi Theta Kappa chapter, and the Honors Student Council at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ.  She has been a steady, encouraging presence as cinematographer and actress in two ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ films. Last week she set a new precedent at the college, being the first student to present at a major regional professional conference—the Western Historical Association.  Her work on African-American leaders in Texas after the Civil War has been accepted for publication in the spring.

Dr. Charles Florio served as President of ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ for thirteen years, from 1995 to 2008.  During his tenure, enrollments, building, credentials of the faculty, and the stature of the college showed a steady increase.  In 2007, the college received one of the largest private gifts ever to a rural community college, of 1.7 million dollars, from Elizabeth Whatley.
