ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Webb Society presents new film about Wright Patman

Charles Shafer, in his memoir of life in Northeast Texas, noted that when he was young, Congressman Wright Patman seemed to speak to local residents with the voice of God?and he ?appeared about as old.?† Patman represented Northeast Texas in Washington D.C. from 1929 to 1976, and is commemorated today by the Bowie and Cass County lake that bears his name.

But what did his life and tenure say about our region?† What kind of man was he? This is a question that the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Webb Society has sought to answer in a new film about Wright Patman's life.

Matthew Jordan elected to GPHC Executive Council

The annual October vote of the members of the Great Plains Honors Council (GPHC), an association of 80 honors colleges and programs, recently confirmed†Matthew Jordan,†a Presidential Scholar at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, as the 2013-2014 Student Representative of its Executive Council.

Jordan, the 2012 Salutatorian of Pittsburg High School, will become the highest ranking student in an organization that represents thousands of honors students, including those at large and prestigious universities.

Cypress Bank donates laptop to ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Honors

For the sixth year in a row, Cypress Bank has funded the purchase of a laptop for the use of ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Honors students.† This year?s recipient, Scot Pitzer (center), was a U.I.L. science, biology, and math standout who placed in the state U.I.L. finals in science. †He graduated from Paul Pewitt High School and hopes to become a pharmacist. Noah Griffin receives Caldwell Award for Texas History essay

At the recent Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) conference in Fort Worth, ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ honors student Noah Griffin won first place in the Caldwell Award competition for the best essay in Texas History.† He received a $400 award for the honor, topping all peers in the college/university, freshman/sophomore level.† Steve Cure, the Director for Educational Services of the TSHA, remarked that there was an especially crowded field of entries this year.

Griffin is the son of Joy and Dr. Stephen Griffin from Pittsburg, Texas.

Andrew Yox named President-Elect of Great Plains Honors Council



ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ professor Andrew Yox of Mount Pleasant has been named President-Elect of the Great Plains Honors Council (GPHC). Yox was chosen to serve by his peers and will assume his new role at the annual GPHC conference at West Texas A&M University this April 5-7. He will begin his term as President in November 2013.†

ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Honors students begin work on historical film

† † The ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Honors students got a head start on their semester last week as they traveled to Jefferson to film their second feature-length movie.



† † The students are currently in the process of producing a 38-scene film on the life of Morris Sheppard, a native of Morris County.†Sheppard authored the 18th amendment and is known as the father of prohibition.
