Northeast Texas poetry contest winners announced
Entries could be any style or length, but were asked to focus on some aspect of life in Northeast Texas. Contest judges were Professors Chuck Hamilton, Anna Ingram, and Jim Swann. Cash prizes were provided by Friends of ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Honors. The winners were as follows:
ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ holds retirement reception for Jerry Massey
ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ celebrated the service of Jerry Massey, a long-time member of the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ board of Trustees, with a retirement reception on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Massey (left), of Pittsburg, recently retired from the board after 18 years of service. He and his wife, Susan, are retiring to the Houston area in order to be closer to family. Other members of the college board, faculty, staff, and community gathered in the Whatley Center foyer to honor Massey. Dr. Brad Johnson (right), ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ President, and Mr. Bill Priefert, ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Board Member, †gave remarks.

Stephen Milburn wins STAR Scholarship
Stephen Milburn, a ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ student from Mount Pleasant, was one of six recipients of the Dr. Mary Hood STAR Scholarship.†The scholarship honors returning community college students in the Texas region who show outstanding promise as leaders and as scholars.†The recipients were announced at the recent Texas Honors Institute held at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, TX and recognized onstage.
Eagles Athletics helps Habitat for Humanity
On August 24 100+ ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Eagles swooped down and landed on six Habitat for Humanity lots on 9th street in Mount Pleasant. Directed by coaches Josh Stewart, Shane Wedd, Jessica Keith, Donovan Dowling, and Kayla King; as well as Habitat volunteers Tim Hart and Ronny White, the students attacked neglected homesites. Members of the softball, baseball and soccer teams (including coaches) spent the day clearing the lots of rotting trees, briars, and other assorted trash. The team was provided with a barbecue lunch by Ronny Farmer.

Ron Clinton to perform solo piano recital at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ
Dr. Ron Clinton, ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Executive Vice President for Instruction, will perform a solo piano recital on Sunday, Sept. 15 at†2:30 p.m. at the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts.†Tickets to the concerts are $10 for adults and $5 for children and ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ students with a current ID. Proceeds from the event will benefit scholarships for ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ students.
The concert will feature selections by Scarlatti, Beethoven, Chopin,†Gershwin,†and Liszt.

Fredia Thomas completes Leadership Excellence Academy
Fredia Thomas, ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ†TEAMS and Adult Education Student Retention Specialist, recently completed the Leadership Excellence Academy (LEA) and is now a Certified Manager in Program Improvement (CMPI). This certification is the first of its kind in the adult education and literacy field and signifies†national†membership in an elite group of professional managers.
Noah Griffin wins Coca-Cola Leader of Promise Scholarship
A ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ sophomore has been named a 2013 Coca-Cola Leader of Promise by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
