ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will host its August 2023 commencement ceremony on Friday, Aug. 11 in the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts at 7 p.m. Seating is limited, so only guests who have tickets will be admitted into the auditorium. Graduation will be streamed live on  and  for those who are unable to attend in person.

Michelle Calderon and Aubrey Watkins were recently awarded scholarships at the Phi Theta Kappa Texas Honors Institute. The PTK convention concluded on July 16 and scholarships were awarded. Those who have received the STAR scholarships from Phi Theta Kappa demonstrated academic and leadership promise. Phi Theta Kappa members from any community college in the state of Texas are eligible for the award.

We take mental health and wellness very seriously at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ! Recent studies show that more than 60% of college students suffer from some sort of mental health concern and almost are struggling with anxiety or depression. In order to provide more support to both students and faculty/staff, ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ recently instituted a Counseling & Wellness Center located in BT 111.

The ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Work4College Program is so much more than just a job! In addition to doing meaningful work on campus, W4C students also take a class that covers a variety of topics that help them as they transition into adulthood. These past two weeks they have focused on learning proper etiquette and became CPR certified.

Three ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ honors scholars involved with the coming honors film on the traveling preachers of early Texas were able to witness Shakespeare’s King Lear in an afternoon production on 13 July.  They traveled to the annual Texas Shakespeare Festival in Kilgore. Donors of Honors Northeast such as Mary Lou Mowery made the visit possible.  The students drove with Dr. Andrew Yox, whose ticket was also covered--by Jerald Mowery.

The 2023 Discovery Kids College wrapped up on Thursday, July 20th. More than 100 kids participated in 16 classes over the past two weeks. While all of the courses were designed to be fun, they were also educational in nature.

Clara Ramirez

Clara Ramirez, ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s pioneer winner of the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship in 2010, recently won a residency at Duke University as a primary-care Administrative Fellow.  She is moving this summer from her home in Fort Worth to Durham, North Carolina to assume her new role. Ramirez was a 2008 Mount Pleasant Valedictorian who came to ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ as a Presidential Scholar.
