ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ

On 5 May, for the fifteenth time, community judges and ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ students converged on the foyer of the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ for an annual McGraw-Hill Poster Contest.  The scholarly competition was enabled again by generous grants, from Beverly Kelley of Mount Vernon, and the McGraw-Hill Education Corporation—through the special work of Bill Welsh, and Casey Slaght who work in the corporate office in Dubuque, Iowa.  

ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will host two spring commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 13th in the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts. Seating is limited, so only guests who have tickets will be admitted into the auditorium. Both events will be streamed live on  and  for those who are unable to attend in person. 

Every semester full-time and associate faculty in ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s Division of Math, Physics and Engineering can select an outstanding student, who is exceptional in some way. For the Spring 2023 semester, Dr. Doug Richey nominated Megan Cassie Sherman from Mount Pleasant as outstanding in Introductory Statistics.

The ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta recently inducted new members at an afternoon ceremony on campus. Sigma Kappa Delta is an English honor society with more than 400 chapters across the country. In order to qualify for an invitation for Sigma Kappa Delta, students must maintain a high GPA and achieve excellent grades in their English courses. The ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ chapter was recently revived after a several year hiatus under the leadership of Jennifer Sparks, Interim English Faculty.

For the Spring 2023 semester, Interim English Faculty Jennifer Sparks nominated (from left) Kimberly Vaughan, Mary Faith Wilson, Klarissa Vaughn, Owen Nichelson and Carson Lorch.

Sparks said that each of these students worked very hard and went the extra mile in her classes.

Madison Speight has been selected as the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Psi Beta National Junior Honor Society chapter’s scholarship winner for 2022/23 academic year. The $500 scholarship is to help defray expenses of Psi Beta members who are transferring to a 4 -year school. Scholarship winners are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service and leadership. Ms. Speight from Daingerfield, TX will be attending Texas Woman’s University in the fall. 

The Medical Assistant Program at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ has extended the deadline for 2023-2024 applications through July 31, 2023. Whether you only need to work on one section or all three (Reading, Writing & Math), these bootcamps are specially designed to prepare you for the TSI Assessment. Anyone who needs to take the TSI is welcome to sign up at no cost to you. Classes will be held June 8 through 29 and July 6 through 29 from 1-3 p.m.
