For ten years in the β€œBioTex” seminar at ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅, honors students have experienced a November β€œemail shootout.” This is something like a cross between an ongoing basketball game with scores changing in real time, and a fast-paced, scholarly-poetic thinkathon.  The course challenges students to conceptualize the elements of their Texas history research essays, to utilize crossover β€œanalogs, (terms)” particularly from biology, and to provide terse definitions of their newly minted concepts.

The Carroll Shelby Automotive Program at ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ added two β€œnew” Mustangs to its stable this week. On Monday they took delivery of a pair of 1968 Shelbys donated by Barry Smith of  in Blair County, Pennsylvania. Though both the same model year and convertibles, one is a (white) and the other a (black).

β€œThere is a serious shortage of paramedics in our area and ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ is hoping to help fill that gap. We know it is difficult for practicing EMTs to continue their education due to shift work schedules. This program is designed specifically with them in mind,” Russell VanBibber, ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ EMS Faculty, said.

The ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ Theatre Program will present A 1940s Christmas Carol, written and directed by Page Petrucka, December 2-4. The play will be performed at the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts. Show time is 7:30 p.m. each night with an additional Saturday matinee on December 4 at 2:30 pm.

The ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ Fire Academy is now recruiting for its 20th Academy. Since 2002, the program has trained numerous individuals in fire service.

β€œIt is hard to believe that we have been meeting our region’s need for trained firefighters for 20 years. This program is an asset to our community and is a great opportunity for those interested in fire service,” Lisa York, ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ Continuing Education Coordinator, said.

Israel Perez, a Presidential-Scholar sophomore of Honors Northeast, has become the first winner of the Russell-Mowery Perpetual Honors Scholarship. This annual $500 award goes to an honors student who has made significant contributions to Northeast Texas culture and life.
